Artistic approach
Since the early 80’s, my photographic work has evolved around two main axes. First, there is a documentary approach with a special interest in memory and the history of specific sites, territories and landscapes, be them vast or intimate. From this realm of my work come pictures that try to give voice to silent and mute things, to what is destined to disappear. Emblematic of this approach are the series Dieppe (2004) and Lieux Mêmes (2009) both produced in France and Après Strand (2010) produced in Gaspésie.

Then, there is a second, more intimate, approach that deals with a constant everyday practice. In this specter of my work, I explore reality for its fictional potential and autobiographical echoes. My work focuses on producing images that highlight the irregularities and poetical ambiguities, the restive signs in the visible world. I try to make these photographs a true reflection of an interior world.

In both cases, my work bares witness to my profound attachment to the still image, to the power of transformation that photography holds and to its capacity at crystalizing time. Be it on the wall, in a book or in the public space, my work is constructed of series that explore narration and the acquaintances between images.

I have mixed relationships with film and cinema. At first, I am an observer. I was an on-set stills photographer for many years, looking in the shadows of sound stages and films in the making (Témoin de L’ombre). Then I’ve used the cinema camera to photograph, exploring the representation of time, motion and stillness in photography (Les Images~Temps). Finally, I came to cinema by directing a few short documentary films, with the experience of sequences of moving images and sound. Film and video have become an extension of my photography work.

My work follows a long tradition that uses the descriptive means of photography and its instantaneous approach to time to find images in the real world and integrate intuition in my creative process. With a rigorous approach to the editing process, my work often reveals itself in long narrative sequences. Many times, this process tens of attribute new meaning to photographs when they meet. This unpredictable process enriches my work. Finding objects, places, people and situations and giving them new meanings, letting them transcend what they describe, there lies the soul of my work. More than a means of expression, photography has become a tool to question the world, a means of resistance towards the proliferation of images.
